Marriage Mondays- Instagram… why not?

Marriage Mondays- Instagram… why not?

Come on in, the water’s fine. Sometimes you think you hate something, you build up a wall against it, and then that wall slowly comes down and you realize the thing you disliked is actually pretty cool. I had been anti-phone photography for quite some time, seeing all the low-res photos uploaded to Facebook every day by the dozens, with special filters and coloring that resemble the classic Holga and Diana made me cringe. I was also troubled because I thought the more people embraced these snapshots the less they would appreciate the high quality images produced by “real” cameras such as my own. So dramatic! It turns out there is no threat, in fact it’s great that people are documenting life’s little moments all the more because of this wonderful convenience, and I actually like a lot of the Instagram features including the manipulation of depth of field (who knew an iPhone could mimic a tilt shift lens?). Yes, I admit the abundance of food photos as well as just-plain-out-of-focus photos are still irking me, but life goes by so very fast so why not snatch up some of the moments we so badly don’t want to forget? In the time it takes me to run inside and grab my camera, switch out the lens and re-format the memory card I could keep sitting by the fire, take another sip of wine, and snap a photo with my phone. Why not? Instagram… I think I kinda like you, let’s be friends.

Marriage Mondays- May Day giveaway!

Marriage Mondays- May Day giveaway!

Spring is here and love is in the air!

May 1st is just around the corner, and my little photo company will be celebrating it’s 4th year! In honor of May Day and it’s Maypole tradition (hence the company name), I am giving away a FREE styled engagement session (complete with goodies like hair and makeup). Love goes hand in hand with flowers and ribbons, so as we welcome in Spring and dance around the Maypole, I want to celebrate a love story through the gift of photography. What’s your love story? What makes the two of you inseparable? What are the things that make you crazy in love?

Email me your love story: bethany@maypolestudios.com
It can be funny or serious, long or short, yours or someone else’s (you can submit on behalf of a friend, as long as they really do exist). This isn’t limited to engaged couples, all are welcome. Boyfriends, girlfriends, in new relationships or perhaps celebrating a lifetime together. The couple with the best story wins the photo session, a 2-3 hour afternoon with yours truly and my camera. Please submit by April 29th, 2012, so that a winner can be announced on May 1st. I look forward to reading your submissions!

Marriage Monday’s- Dig Deeper!

Marriage Monday’s- Dig Deeper!

One Life. One Love. One Body.

As many of our New Year’s resolutions melt away with the last of Winter’s snow, we hope a few good habits remain. Although I don’t think a life without wine, cheese, butter, or coffee (etc.) would be worth living, I still want to do right by this body… after all- it’s the only one I have and I should take good care of it. I will never be red-carpet material, my curves are here to stay, but it feels so great to push yourself to do better and make improvements. I have worked out off and on my whole life, but over the last 2 months I have remained committed to the daily “Insanity” routine, Shaun T is a regular presence in my living room and I probably spend more time with him and his very lean crew of guys and gals than I do with most of my friends (although I don’t shout obscenities at my friends nearly as much as I do to Shaun T). The results are great, but no- I will not be posting photos of myself in spandex for the ogling eyes of the internet (at least not yet). Taking care of ourselves is just as important as maintaining our relationships, we will make those around us happier if we are happy. I have found happiness in life, and am incredibly happy in love (married for 13 years- hells ya!), and I am getting happier with my body every day. There are no excuses for not doing your best, and it’s never to late to make a change (i.e. Tony Horton, creator of P90x, is 54 and is in the best shape of his life). As Shaun T likes to say, “dig deeper, you can do it!”

Marriage Mondays- You are what you eat

Marriage Mondays- You are what you eat

I still remember the lyrics to a song I was taught back in the 4th grade: “you are what you eat, from your head to your feet, so be sure to eat food that’s good for you…” Of course we all know we should eat our vegetables, try to buy organic and non-GMO, avoid the fast food (we all watched “super size me”, right?), etc. etc. Luckily we have many chefs and restaurants making the extra effort to not only introduce delicious ingredients to the masses, but also use local farms and local produce for their dishes. Even when shopping at Whole Foods you can’t see how the food was handled before you brought it home, how long it sat on a truck and how far it traveled, and much of that beautiful fruit was flown in from other countries (not much of a small carbon footprint when jumbo jets are involved). So why not get on board with the “farm to table” movement? Yes, the selection is smaller and dependent on what’s in season, but if the food gets to you faster because it’s local then it is fresher and better for you. As a wedding industry professional it’s awesome to see my favorite caterers abiding by these “farm to table” principles, working hard to offer creative and delicious menus while using local farmers and producers. One of these is Pure Kitchen Catering, they are amazing. With it being January I figured many of us are making resolutions to eat better and healthier so why not share some photos from a photo shoot I did with Pure Kitchen? I photographed a couple of their dishes, they created a lovely tabletop, and a few models posed for us too, all at Room 1520. (See below for details)

Marriage Mondays- Life’s Too Short

Marriage Mondays- Life’s Too Short

“There is more to life than increasing its speed.”
-Mahatma Gandhi

Happy 2012! With a new year comes new things, and although we all do our best to welcome change sometime’s it’s sad to see something go. With the end of 2011 I say goodbye to one of my favorite quirky Chicago locations, Life’s Too Short. This old bar-front had been closed for years, acquiring a nostalgia with all its peeling paint as well as additions from many of Chicago’s graffiti artists. The “true-love” street art on the neighboring fence was a great spot for engagement or wedding photos and made appearances on many photographer’s blogs. The whole facade has now been removed to make way for a new bar opening in its place. I look forward to finding new hidden gems rich with photographic opportunity in 2012, but every time I pass this intersection I will remember fondly the photos I have taken there. Although the colorful signs have been taken down, I will greet the new year with their messages: slow down because life’s too short, don’t be afraid to love someone so much it hurts, and always believe in true love. Happy New Year!
(here are a few photos I have taken there over the last 3 years)

Marriage Mondays- Baby It’s Cold Outside

Marriage Mondays- Baby It’s Cold Outside

It is so exciting to watch your friend’s business succeed. As the photographer in the mix, I most often get to be the one to document it all, or even help create the photos for their catalog of products. My friend Laura moved to Beaver Island Michigan to be with her boyfriend Mark, and they have a great little business in furs. I realize many of you may not be prone to wearing a coyote or fox fur hat during the winter, but let me tell you that it is not only the warmest way to brave the cold Chicago winds, but this is also a necessary product of this island. This is an area where you must hunt the local beavers, fox, and coyotes in order to control the animal populations, so why not make every bit of use of the animals? These hats, scarves, gloves, boot warmers, and ear muffs are made with care, all by hand, and all from locally trapped animals that roam Beaver Island in plenty. Mark and Laura work hard to bring their craftsmanship to each piece, resulting in beautiful fur wares. They are selling their products through Etsy, you can visit their website here:

Congrats Laura and Mark for continuing to create beautiful and natural products! So put on your mittens and your fur hats because “baby it’s cold outside!”
