Marriage Mondays- For the love of polaroid

Marriage Mondays- For the love of polaroid

I purchased the Fujifilm Instax 210 camera this past January and am still loving it, on almost a daily basis. I keep it on my kitchen counter so it’s always nearby when friends come over. It seems funny to me to see the various digital replicas via the Iphone, all of a sudden everyone wants their cell phones to mimic the classic light leaks of the Holga, or even have the border and noticeable overexposure of a Polaroid. I certainly don’t begrudge anyone for using these effects, in fact it has given way to more artistic images (and is much more pleasant to see on facebook than the typical out-of-focus shot from a mobile device). However, there is nothing that compares to pressing the shutter and hearing that wonderful whirring sound as the camera spits out your photo, or the anticipation as you wait for the image to slowly develop. Sure, I know the quality isn’t the greatest, especially with the inconsistent flash leaving you with extreme under and over exposures in most of your images. Not to mention the terrible parallax error, making it nearly impossible to properly compose the shot and not chop anyone’s head off. But all of these lovely imperfections are what make this camera so fun. As the stack of polaroids on my counter grows, the more fun I have looking through them all… a night spent hanging with friends, or maybe my husband making dinner, or of my cats curled up for a nap. I know I can just as easily take photos of these moments with my cell phone or take out my Canon, but it just wouldn’t be the same. Polaroids are just plain fun, and everyone smiles when they get passed around the room. Here are some scans of a few recent polaroids taken, nothing fancy but that’s the whole point.

Best of 2010- Engagement Sessions!

Best of 2010- Engagement Sessions!

I really love engagement sessions, hands down, 200 percent. It is the perfect way to get to know each other as photographer and couple, as well as exploit awesome areas of the city in a relaxed atmosphere (no wedding day pressure). I realize I am a bit late in putting this together, it already being the end of March, but I have finally started re-visiting my work from 2010 and choosing favorites, updating the portfolio, etc, etc. I originally planned to share 20 or so favorites from my 2010 engagement sessions, but the list kept growing longer and longer, and I couldn’t bear to trim off anymore. So here it is… my 70 favorites. I love them all, and count myself lucky to be anticipating so many wonderful weddings this year. Enjoy!

I won a contest!

I won a contest!

We can all easily admit that it feels great to win something, whether it be as small as a cup of coffee or as big as a car or house. I was recently informed that I won a contest I entered on Valentine’s day. I did not think I stood a chance to win, it was a national contest among wedding vendors sponsored by the lovely blog Mywedding.com. I was drawn to the quirkiness of the prize, and now that I have won it, I am realizing that it surpasses my first impression as a very unique and rare opportunity. So… drum roll please… I won a Love Bike! You may ask what is a love bike? It is an awesome, heart-shaped bike for two, even more romantic and cute than a classic tandem bike. The artist who created this bike (Eric Stellar) is know for his invention of the Conference Bike, he makes these wonderful contraptions in Amsterdam, and there are only 10 Love Bikes in the whole world! It turns out that I will be the second person in the United States to have a Love Bike, and there is a catch. In order to accept this prize, I am required to photograph a couple with the bike. I can certainly do that! Not only will this be a great prop for an engagement session, but how cute would it be for a bride and groom to pedal this thing around Chicago? Or what if I can talk my husband into riding it with me for this year’s “bike the drive”? The possibilities are endless. I say bring on the couples! Whether you’re a bride, groom, a client of mine or not, let me know if you might like to give the Love Bike a spin. And if you see me and my Love Bike around town, be sure to say hi!

Marriage Mondays- A fresh coat of paint

Marriage Mondays- A fresh coat of paint

There’s nothing better to spruce up a room than fresh paint on the walls. I may be getting a head start on Spring cleaning, but I am excited to add some new color to my house. I decided to get very adventurous on a couple of the colors, I really believe that being surrounded by exciting colors on a daily basis can make life more enjoyable. I love colorful clothes, especially socks, I like trying new hair colors, so why not get a little crazy with my interiors? So I am wrapping up this blog entry to return to my paint brush, a fresh start to a fabulous year, and I promise to post photos once the project is finished. Happy painting!

Marriage Mondays- When friends succeed

Marriage Mondays- When friends succeed

As many of you know, my husband is a very talented music producer (stranded on a planet). When he works with an artist on a record, it is a long process (many months and sometimes years), and with so many hours spent together it is no surprise that strong bonds and friendships are formed. I usually have a front row seat throughout the record making process, and find myself gaining new friends as well. I have had the pleasure of photographing many of these talented musicians, and it is always such a thrill to see everything come together and their careers take flight. One friend in particular, Amirah Ali, is making waves across the globe. Not only is she beautiful on the inside and out, but her songs are stellar- she is not afraid to create a beautiful melody with serious subject matters, she wants her music to carry a message for fellow Malaysians as well as the rest of the world. Her talents deserve recognition, and I am thrilled to see that happening. I will admit that it’s quite exciting to see the photos we created together appearing in large scale for her performances and in the press, I feel privilieged to have contributed in a small way to help her on her music journey. But my hat really goes off to Scott, my husband, for his wonderful work on the songs. His instrumentation and production brings the music to life, and when you add in Amirah’s vocals you have an awesome creation. I am positive that there are great things in store for Amirah, and as with all my friends, I wish her boundless success and happiness. Amirah- sending you a big hug from Chicago all the way to Malaysia!

A recent feature in Marie Claire:

Cover for her EP, and also the backdrop for a live performance in Malaysia.
